About this calculator

“How much car can I afford?” is the question most buyers ask before shortlisting models. This tool answers with an approximate on-road budget derived from the EMI you are willing to carry.

It does not replace a bank’s FOIR checks or credit assessment. Use the result as a shopping ceiling, then validate EMI and ownership cost for specific cars on CarDecision.

Formula summary

Max EMI = income × EMI share; invert EMI formula to max principal; add down payment for on-road budget.

Assumptions

  • Reducing-balance EMI formula; processing fees and insurance add-ons not included unless you add them to the loan.
  • Interest rates vary by bank, credit score and promotional offers.
  • Outputs are estimated / indicative — not a sanction letter.
  • EMI-to-income caps are planning aids — lenders apply their own policies.

FAQs

What EMI-to-income ratio is safe?

Many planners keep total EMIs (including this car) under roughly 30–40% of take-home pay. Choose a conservative percentage that still leaves room for fuel and insurance.

Should I stretch for a higher segment?

A higher on-road price also lifts insurance, tyres and depreciation. Run an ownership calculator before stretching the last lakh.
